The Studio

For this project I have taken the role of managing the studio for the group. As the rest of the group are not too familiar with the studio I would be there to set up the mics, making sure that they were of a suitable level for each person involved in the recording as some may be quieter than others and so I would need to make sure each mic was set up appropriately.

To ensure that we had the recordings that we wanted we had ensure that we recorded numerous times. Ensuring that we record many times helps with the editing process as the way something is said in one recording may be swapped in place of the line from another recording where that line wasn’t so strong, or where there there was less interference in terms of a heavy breath or lip smacking in the recording.

When we had done a few recordings and felt we had what we wanted, I then took to finding a way for the recordings to be shared with the editor. At the time we had no form of hard drive or memory stick so I then decided to upload them onto Google Drive and share the link to the folder so that everyone can view them and that they may be downloaded later for editing.

The Editing

Although Rebecca was editing, I would provide assistance through the process, providing my own input into how the recording could sound better as the editor may miss things from being so used to listening to the edit, and so I would be able to provide a fresh pair of ears for the editing process. Also with there being a strong accent there, I could also provide and outsider’s perspective in the sense of being able to see if it would be hard for those not said to the accent to be able to understand what is said and therefore need slower pace.

Also with putting in my creative input into the editing, I am able to give my perspective on what things would fit well with where. Leaving out gaps for any foley sounds that we may want to add.

After listening to the first edit (without the foley) we then sat down to discuss what sounds we wanted to add into the recording. We went through the script looking at what sounds would be best suited for where, creating a little sound list of the sounds that we wanted and then after mentioning the sounds that we wanted, we then went about figuring out how to go about making the sounds listing out just how we would make each sound.

When it came the sounds associated with the horse when mentioned in the script, we struggled with ideas on how to make the sounds with the creasing of the leather from the saddle and reigns to com across as though someone is climbing onto the horse and then for as though the rider is going along. And so I took to do some research and found that generally what would be used would be the use of things like belts or any other everyday leather based material and so we could use whatever leather things we have, to create those particular sounds.
